Packing
Luggage: Language & Friendship permits one checked suitcase and one carry-on. You must be able to easily manage both on your own.
Checked suitcase:
· ONE suitcase or duffle bag with built-in wheels, maximum 22” high
· Must weigh less than 40 lbs. Half that weight is recommended.
· Left unlocked or with a TSA lock
· Airlines may allow bigger/heavier bags, but it is essential to pack light and small when traveling as a group AND you must be able to carry your own bags up and down stairs, to/from buses and trains, etc.
· For international flights, most airlines permit each passenger to check one piece of luggage without a fee. When your flight is confirmed, please check the airline website for up-to-date baggage information.
Carry-on bag:
· One small, manageable bag like a backpack or shoulder bag.
· Must fit in the overhead bin or under your seat.
· You must be able to lift it into the overhead bin.
· Check with the Transportation Security Administration website (www.tsa.gov) for details on security regulations, e.g. 3-1-1 rule.
· If you prefer not to check a bag and have your carry-on as your only bag, it can be no more than 9” x 14” x 22”.
Note:
· Mark your bags both inside and outside with your name, U.S. address, and phone number. You will receive 2 L&F bag tags to identify your group.
· Baggage insurance is not included in the program price. If your bag is lost, be sure to file a claim before leaving the airport.
· Don’t take anything you can’t afford to lose. Leave at home any items whose sentimental or monetary value makes them irreplaceable.
· Most airlines charge for a second bag, so do not plan to check two bags on your return flight unless you are willing to pay the fee.
To keep on you when you travel in waist belt or neck pouch—one or the other is mandatory!
· passport (be sure to sign it)
· debit/ATM card, credit card (hide PIN in your journal)
· small amount of American money and foreign currency
· hotel list with contact info for teachers/leaders
· watch (be sure to wear a watch; being on time is critical!)
